Edge computing for autonomous vehicles market value in 2024
Software stack balances local computation with cloud resources The Snapdragon Ride AD software stack demonstrates the division of processing responsibilities between edge and cloud. Its perception system uses a camera-based vision stack for object detection, surround view, lane recognition, traffic sign interpretation, parking assistance, driver monitoring and mapping.
Low-level perception between camera and radar reduces tracking latency and optimises system performance in active safety scenarios. Stack development is supported by a data and simulation factory that integrates real-world data with synthetic data generation and AI-based simulations.
The division of labour reflects different time scales of decisionmaking. Decisions about braking or steering happen in milliseconds and must occur locally. Route optimisation, traffic pattern analysis and software updates happen over minutes or hours and can leverage cloud infrastructure.
