Grid readiness defines project timelines Land acquisition, power allocation, equipment procurement and statutory clearance each move at their own pace – and a delay in any one of them sends ripples throughout the entire programme. Sridhar frames the problem in terms of the weakest link in that chain.
“ Large-scale data centre projects depend on several critical enablers progressing together, and the overall timeline is ultimately determined by the slowest component,” Sridhar explains.
“ Today, grid readiness and timely power availability have become the defining constraints, particularly as AI deployments require significantly higher power capacities.”
Supply chains for high-voltage electrical plant have tightened as operators across multiple markets compete for the same manufacturing slots, while permitting for large sites in India typically involves several agencies working to separate schedules.
“ Project timelines are also influenced by longer lead times for critical equipment such as transformers, switchgear and advanced cooling systems, along with approvals from multiple agencies,” says Sridhar.
