SUSTAINABILITY
Green Mountain has operated in Rjukan since 2014 and its data centre sits 800 metres from Hima Seafood’ s land-based trout farm in the same industrial area. The two companies have connected the sites so that excess heat from the data centre warms the water in Hima’ s aquaculture systems. After use, the cooled water can be returned to Green Mountain and integrated into its cooling process.
Construction and installation were completed and the system entered operation in autumn 2025. Norway’ s Minister of Digitalisation and Public Governance, Karianne Tung, officiated at the launch in February 2026. The first phase is being tested at up to 1.75MW while the partners run a joint feasibility study, and its results will guide a second phase that aims to scale the system to 8MW.
The project addresses the barrier that limits heat reuse at many sites: the lack of a nearby user with continuous demand for low-grade heat. Landbased aquaculture needs warm water year-round, and colocation in one industrial area allows a direct pipe connection through heat exchangers. Green Mountain states that its data centres run on 100 % renewable power.
