ECODATACENTER – SWEDEN
EcoDataCenter has built its Falun campus around cross-laminated timber since construction of its first facility began in 2018. The company’ s life cycle assessments show its timber buildings carry up to 60 % lower embodied carbon than comparable steel and concrete data centres, and that the timber structure of one building stores approximately 2,650 tonnes of biogenic CO₂e. Those figures cover the building rather than the IT equipment inside it.
Operational data in the 2025 Sustainability Report shows a PUE of 1.20 at the Falun campus and 100 % fossilfree electricity from hydro and wind.
Groundwater withdrawal fell 47 % year on year as the site began switching to surface water from a decommissioned reservoir, with a target of using no groundwater for cooling by 2028.
In 2025, the operator brought a liquidcooled NVIDIA DGX GB200 cluster into service with DeepL and, at the end of the year, connected it to the existing heat-recovery system, which supplies surplus heat to local pellet production. The report states that heat reuse remains small, at 0.5 % of Falun’ s energy use in 2025. Timber addresses the embodied carbon of the building – scaling heat offtake is the next test for the campus.
