Rack densities and brownfield expansion drive complexity Grid interconnection timelines in established markets such as Northern Virginia now stretch to seven to 10 years from initial request to activation, pushing operators towards distributed campuses, onsite generation and brownfield acquisitions of existing local service providers. Much of the capacity coming online sits within this existing installed base rather than newbuild projects.
That brownfield strategy brings its own complications. Acquiring an operating facility means inheriting equipment with no maintenance history and no consistent vendor standard.
" When operators acquire existing facilities rather than build from scratch," explains Luis Fernandes, Senior Research Manager, Digital and Datacenter Infrastructure and Services at IDC – one of the white paper’ s authors. " They introduce unknown equipment configurations from multiple vendors, with no operational history, requiring immediate integration with asset performance management systems."
The scale of the fragmentation is considerable. Large operators typically run three to six primary vendors across critical infrastructure categories such as power, cooling and backup generation, often for competitive pricing or contingency reasons.
SKILLED-TECHNICIAN SHORTAGE COMPOUNDS OPERATIONAL RISK
Layered onto this equipment fragmentation is a widening talent gap. In the US, for every new skilled worker entering the industry, seven new data centre vacancies open. Multiple industry surveys cite skilled labour shortages as a top operational concern.
Roles such as controls engineers, electrical and mechanical engineers and commissioning engineers require specialist certification for high-voltage systems, and the geographic spread of new builds into secondary and tertiary markets means qualified workers are often scarce exactly where facilities are being built.

Datacenters deploys identical equipment across its campuses so that staff can move between sites without needing deep expertise in every configuration. As Sudhir puts it, the aim is to simplify what onsite teams need to know.
" My onsite team has to know relatively little about the equipment," he says. " What they do have to know is that the equipment is misbehaving, and they have to know who to call. They have to know what number to dial."
