Data centres affect local land use, water, power, jobs, planning and infrastructure, and firms that haven’ t communicated well with the public are now facing delays, objections and reputational pressure at great business cost.
Community engagement professionals want to work for operators that take their role seriously – they cannot defend a site if there is no budget, no local investment and no clear benefit to the area.
To attract them, operators need to fund real community investment – whether that’ s local training academies, apprenticeships, water infrastructure upgrades, or genuine STEM outreach – and give the community lead the budget and autonomy to spend it.
Education can help long-term through geography, civics and business studies, teaching young people what critical infrastructure is, why it matters
