Data centres can maximise the value of existing resources and significantly reduce waste by extending equipment lifespan and actively purchasing second-hand technology. Despite the clear benefits, however, Chris notes that the technology industry is often hesitant to embrace repurposed, resold and recycled technology, clinging to the outdated notion that“ new is always better”.
He says:“ Implementing approaches that support a more circular economy is crucial in the face of the growing e-waste crisis. The UN reports that less than a quarter of e-waste is recycled, with a staggering 62 million tons produced in 2022. The rapid adoption of AI technologies threatens to accelerate this trend. Overcoming the fear of refurbished and pre-owned technology and recognising that more circular systems are central to a more responsible digital future is not just environmentally sound, it’ s a smart way to efficiently stretch your IT budget.”
