Amazon Web Services accounts for roughly a third of the global cloud infrastructure market and has built the physical estate to support it. Launched in 2006, AWS spans more than 39 regions and more than 120 availability zones, each built from discrete facilities with independent power, cooling and networking – an architecture much of the sector has since adopted. Amazon’ s capital expenditure, most of it directed at AWS infrastructure, passed US $ 100bn in 2025. Its influence extends beyond its own campuses. AWS designs its own servers, networking equipment and silicon, including Graviton and Trainium, and its liquid cooling and power distribution work is shaping supplier roadmaps. Multi-billion dollar regional commitments across the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific sustain demand for colocation partners, developers and the wider supply chain, while long-term power agreements – including nuclear – are altering how the industry procures energy.
