Microsoft has fundamentally re-architected its data centre infrastructure around the concept of the‘ AI superfactory’: engineering facilities designed to operate as a unified, multi-site supercomputer. Its flagship Fairwater campuses in Wisconsin and Atlanta feature specialised two-storey building layouts designed to reduce physical cabling distances and eliminate intrasite latency between hundreds of thousands of GPUs. Linked across states by a dedicated, high-capacity
AI Wide Area Network( AI WAN), these campuses deploy ultra-dense rack configurations housing NVIDIA Blackwell systems alongside custom Azure Maia silicon. The facilities rely on massive closed-loop liquid cooling plants that continuously recirculate water without operational consumption. Supported by nuclear power commitments like the Crane Clean Energy Center and with a projected 2026 capital expenditure of US $ 190bn, Microsoft is setting the global blueprint for hyperscale AI compute infrastructure.
