Beyond space savings, 800 VDC radically alters the thermal equation inside of the server cabinet. Heat generation in a conductor scales with the square of the current. Halving the amperage can heavily reduce conductor heat generation – perfect for thermal management and efficiency. By eliminating step-down conversions inside the rack, facilities bypass the very components that force liquid cooling systems to work overtime. Cooling loops can be leveraged purely for thermal management for silicon, rather than dissipating waste heat from redundant power supplies. Using DC also connects much better with clean energy sources like solar panels and large batteries, which already use DC natively. In older systems, green power is converted back and forth between types, and multiple changes encourage loss of energy at every step. An 800 VDC setup eliminates those middle steps, routing clean energy straight to the processors.
With power demands surging, this high-voltage backbone is a welcome innovation connecting increasingly powerful AI chips and the electricity grid. As this demand grows, 800 VDC ensures data centres can manage their thermal footprints while delivering the necessary power capability.
