“ Exposure at the right age can turn an unfamiliar industry into a realistic option”

“ Some people will enter through university, while others may begin with an apprenticeship, T Level or another technical qualification,” he highlights.“ Each can provide a strong foundation, depending on the role.”
A T Level is a UK technical qualification for 16 to 19-year-olds that combines classroom study with an industry placement. He welcomes government plans to widen access to technical education earlier in schools.
“ Exposure at the right age can turn an unfamiliar industry into a realistic option,” asserts Mark.“ The route can also begin in a related trade. Someone trained in electrical installation or mechanical maintenance can build on that experience and move into critical infrastructure.”
Work experience and entry-level operations roles offer another way in, alongside recognised qualifications.
“ Employers need to look beyond job titles and assess the skills people can bring,” Mark goes on.“ Once someone enters the sector, personalised training and mentoring can help them find the right path and build a long-term career.”
A more flexible, skills-based approach carries potential to widen the talent pool and help retain people once they arrive.
