Google continues to lead hyperscale data centre innovation and sustainability at a massive scale.

In 2025, the company plans to spend US $ 75bn on expanding its global data centre and AI infrastructure, with major projects including a reported US $ 10bn for a 1GW facility in Andhra Pradesh, India and a new £ 5bn( US $ 6.65bn) UK investment anchored by the Waltham Cross campus.
Google’ s Council Bluffs, Iowa centre covers 2.9 million square feet and 100 MW, while capacity additions globally now exceed 2.5 GW, powered in part by over 8 GW of contracted clean energy.
In 2024 alone, Google reduced its data centre energy emissions by
12 % despite a 27 % rise in overall data centre electricity demand driven by AI innovation.
Sustainability is embedded in Google’ s DNA, with ambitious targets such as net zero emissions by 2030 and adoption of pioneering tech including small modular nuclear reactors and advanced water replenishment programs.
Chief Sustainability Officer Kate Brandt recently stated:“ We know there is much more work to be done, but I remain hopeful given the positive impact enabled by AI – from transforming how people engage with information, to enhancing business and economic growth, to enabling scientific breakthroughs and driving sustainable innovation for society.”
