Synchronising hardware and construction: The critical timing problem One of the most operationally painful failure modes in any data centre deployment is a timing mismatch between hardware readiness and facility readiness. Hardware arriving before the facility is prepared creates a storage and security problem.
A facility sitting ready with no hardware to fill it generates the revenue delay that hyperscalers are most anxious to avoid. Coordinating the synchronisation correctly requires a level of integration between the logistics partner and the construction programme that goes well beyond conventional project management.
Nicholas describes the challenge, where data centre construction at scale rarely releases capacity all at once – it opens in phases, with logistics teams populating Phase 1 while Phases 2, 3 and 4 remain under construction. The implication is that logistics personnel are working in an active construction environment, where safe walking paths, overhead activities and site conditions change every single day.
“ A lot of time and effort goes into synchronising the hardware and the construction readiness. Being aligned with the construction team is critical. The key to working in a safe environment while still collaborating with construction is building that relationship from day one”
