Part of these plans include confronting the planning system in the UK, which includes speeding up the delivery of new data centres to build more infrastructure and support AI-led developments. It is the hope that faster planning permissions, notably the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, will lead to faster innovation.
“ Data centres are driving the AI revolution,” Rachel Reeves said, emphasising that there is an urgent need for the UK to“ speed up infrastructure delivery. The Planning and Infrastructure Bill is a priority for this government.”
Equinix sits very central to the UK’ s digital economy, with its colocation infrastructure offering customers an opportunity to access more partners and innovation possibilities to enable them to scale effectively.
“ We are facilitating growth activity across the UK’ s economy while supporting their sustainability goals,” James explains.“ Equinix shortens the path for customers, enabling them to connect to thousands of other businesses across the world in an instant. Colocating customers in our data centres removes a host of energy and equipment requirements, providing them with seamless connections in our world-class and sustainable high-performance data centres.”
With the UK eager to become a leader in AI, Equinix is adapting by enabling its customers to adopt liquid-cooled, power-intensive hardware.
“ This includes providing cage and cabinet access to facility water for
scalable liquid-cooled colocation, which is covered by over 96 % renewable energy globally,” James says.“ The trend towards big data analytics and AI requires greater computing capacity and performance. Hardware manufacturers are improving their products to meet this demand, but each new generation of GPU, CPU and FPGA requires more power and generates more heat.”
He adds:“ Because we’ re a major colocation provider working at the intersection of clouds, global networks, digital ecosystems and the edge, we are uniquely positioned to support AI developers who want to connect directly with customers’ servers, so any AI integration is seamless for users.”
