ABOUT THE INFINERA ACQUISITION
Nokia and Infinera announced they had signed an agreement in June 2024 under which Nokia would acquire Infinera. The telco leader expects the acquisition to bring together two innovation leaders to create an optical networks powerhouse. These networks will have the ability to accelerate product roadmaps and further expand Nokia’ s ability to help network operators unlock greater opportunities and power demands of the AI era.“ The speed with which the transaction was approved is very positive for Nokia, as is the strong support the deal has received from customers,” commented Federico Guillén, President of Network Infrastructure at Nokia.
“ We are creating a new organisation that will be a pace-setter in innovation, offering capabilities across a wide range of optical networking technologies, underpinned by the cutting-edge research of Nokia Bell Labs. Innovation benefits from scale, and the expansion offered by the acquisition means that we will be able to bring more to customers, faster.”

At Nokia, Federico is responsible for a broad range of critical networks for customers in both the company’ s communication service provider( CSP) and webscale segments globally.
Prior to the acquisition, Infinera already worked with some of the largest hyperscalers in North America and throughout the rest of the world. Now, Nokia is hopeful that it can use the same data centre customer groups to upsell its IP, switching and routing solutions.
Speaking with Vinai and Manish mere days after the acquisition closed, they shared their optimism with us – suggesting that Infineria will give Nokia an even larger hyperscaler footprint.
“ It’ s a really exciting time for Nokia to double down on our optical business,” Manish shares.“ As our CEO [ former CEO Pekka Lundmark ] has stated, we have a massive growth plan for data centre networking.
“ On the IP side, we already participate in data centre interconnect with our switching and routing portfolio. But Infinera has been heavily involved with hyperscale companies,
