WHAT IT COULD MEAN TO HAVE DATA CENTRES IN SPACE
It seems like a far-away concept, but data centre operators have been thinking about‘ space servers’ for some time. With demand for power-hungry AI data centres growing, the industry has considered a new frontier: Data centres on the moon.
Beyond earth, data centres could benefit from having constant access to solar energy. With less land constraints, these hypothetical facilities could be deployed at speed and scale, expanding with demand. During an AI boom, this proves an attractive proposal.
Recently, Lonestar Data Holdings took steps to realise this idea, claiming to have successfully tested a tiny data centre. The size of a hardback book, it travelled to the moon on the Athena Lunar Lander by Intuitive Machines, which was launched by a SpaceX rocket.
As reported by the BBC, Lonestar said that data centres on the moon could offer customers data processing that is equal parts secure and reliable.
