THE STATE OF CORPORATE SUSTAINABILITY
When it comes to supply chain sustainability , NTT Data ’ s Chief Sustainability Business Officer , David Costa , argues that some specific observations must be made about the state of global corporate sustainability .
A recent study commissioned by NTT , Exploring the Paths to Net Zero , uncovered that larger companies are falling short of their net-zero carbon emissions targets across industries .
“ 68 % of 500 surveyed enterprises selfreported being behind on their plans , and additional analysis from ThoughtLab found the number could be as high as 95 %,” David notes . “ Interestingly , across industries , 59 % of survey leaders ( those on track to meet or exceed their net-zero emissions targets ) capture and analyse data on supply-chain emissions , compared to just 29 % of followers ( those not on track to meet their net-zero emissions targets ).”
The survey also found that these leaders have a much sharper focus on Scope 3 emissions , which encompass the entirety of a company ’ s supply chain , with 86 % having implemented processes to ensure sustainable sourcing and procurement . “ Of the five industries surveyed in the report , companies in the telecommunications and technology industry were the second most likely to be behind on their emissions targets .
In response , David explains that data centre organisations would benefit from maintaining a high level of supply chain sustainability through two primary actions :
• The creation and enforcement of best practices for its suppliers
• The adoption of leading-edge emissions tracking technologies
“ NTT DATA developed a greenhouse gas emissions visualisation platform called C-Turtle to reduce emissions utilising data provided by leading emissions visualisation non-profit CDP ,” he adds . “ The platform also incorporates a system for total allocation tracking , enabling a company to incorporate the results of their suppliers ’ emissions reduction efforts into their own emissions tracking . “ By adopting its own technologies like C-Turtle internally , NTT is empowering a wider corporate ecosystem of environmental and social responsibility .”
