Rethinking infrastructure’ s footprint Vantage’ s Lighthouse Campus’ biodiversity plans demonstrate how evolving sustainability expectations can be reframed as opportunities for data centre developers. By integrating biodiversity into the design process, developers can move beyond mitigation toward regeneration and create infrastructure that actively improves ecological conditions and provides co-benefits for neighbouring communities.
For example, the establishment of structurally diverse native habitats at the Port Washington campus will enhance the recreational experience along the Ozaukee Interurban Trail. By supporting pollinator species, these same habitats have the potential to boost pollination services for neighbouring farms. Native planting, wetlands and green buffers can also help large infrastructure sit more naturally within the local landscape, creating spaces that support biodiversity, improve site functionality and provide value to the surrounding community.
“ Data centres offer a unique opportunity to revitalise areas and communities that otherwise would not have had the investment and resources to do so,” says Cheryl Ginyard-Jones, Managing Director of Ramboll in the Americas.
“ By engaging qualified experts early to incorporate sustainability and engineering solutions, we can see longterm benefits, including supporting endangered species and other flora and fauna threatened by other industries.”
