SUSTAINABILITY Andropogon gerardii- Big Bluestem Native North American Tallgrass Prairie Grass
The proposed planting palette includes characteristic prairie grasses such as big bluestem( Andropogon gerardii) and Indiangrass( Sorghastrum nutans), herbaceous species such as milkweed( Asclepias spp.), wild bergamot( Monarda fistulosa) and purple coneflower( Echinacea purpurea), shrubs like serviceberry( Amelanchier canadensis) and dogwood( Cornus spp.) and native trees such as oak( Quercus spp.) and basswood( Tilia americana).
These plants were selected for their ecological and structural value as well as their ability to support a wide range of insects and other wildlife. In addition to food sources, the design incorporates nesting and overwintering habitats. Proposed features include below-ground nesting opportunities for bumblebees and brush piles that support cavitynesting species such as mason and carpenter bees.
Proposed adjustments to mowing and pruning practices further protect overwintering insects, ensuring consistency with natural cycles and habitat continuity throughout the year.
