One such agreement in Virginia with Dominion Energy aims to develop a project providing at least 300 megawatts( MW) of power to a region where electricity demand is expected to increase by 85 % over the next 15 years.
“ One of the fastest ways to address climate change is by transitioning our society to carbon-free energy sources,” stated Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon Web Services( AWS),“ and nuclear energy is both carbon-free and able to scale – which is why it’ s an important area of investment for Amazon.”
The physics of performance: A forced shift to liquid cooling Every watt of power consumed by a processor is converted into a watt of heat that must be removed. At the densities required for AI, air is no longer a viable cooling medium. It simply cannot transfer heat away from the chips fast enough, leading to thermal throttling, where performance is automatically reduced to prevent damage. This has forced an industrywide pivot to liquid cooling, which is far more efficient at heat transfer.
This technological shift, however, introduces its own engineering complexities.“ Humidity is a huge factor in liquid cooling,” Vivek points out.“ One of the challenges I’ ve seen is, if there is humidity beyond a certain point, there’ s dew that gets created in the data centre, which is as lethal as water entering the system.”
